OK, I know, stupid question. Duhhh, because 10-15% of the vote is Jewish, and then there's AIPAC, etc, etc. What I mean is - is there a good non political reason? Or, why is supporting srael in the best interest of the US? A good reason to the contrary is related to an old World War II joke.
A German wife runs in the house and says "husband, I heard on the radio that Germany has attacked Russia." Her husband said "yes, the Fuerher believes Russia is a danger to the welfare of the German people and must destroyed by our brave soldiers." The wife went to the world globe on their lamp stand and looked at the huge expense of Russian and then at Germany. Then she asked "Liebchen, has the Fuerher seen this map?"
The point is, supporting this tiny little country of what, 5 million(?) people (without oil) totally destroys any chance we have of even a speck of goodwill with about 1.2 billion muslims (with oil). I hate to sound cynical and mercenary, but this just doesn't make sense as being in the nation's best interest. The wingnuts say the arabs hate us because of 1) religion and 2) our success. Both probably true, but they never mention the biggest reason, and the only one that can be justified - our support of Israel.
I think it is safe to say that "9/11", the Iraq war, and all of the al Queda attacks prior to "9/11" have their roots in 1948. That is, our support of Israel is killing Americans, not to mention the horrendous amount of tax dollars, just for direct aid, aside from the war.
I agree that being the first to recognize Israel as a soveriegn nation in
1948 carried an initial onus of support and defense from their hostile arab neighbors. But ?hould that have been in perpetuity. Did we create a poor stepchild that we would have to support and defend until the end of time? I mean really, does anyone know if we gave such a promise at the outset?
This NOT antisemitic. Just a question of why it is in our best interest to continue to support Israel, and why I have never seen this question raised
before - even on DKos. It will have been 60 years shortly, folks. I think
congress should hold a vote and tell the people straight up that we are going to support Israel forevermore in both death and dollars, or set a time to cut the cord. If home in the Middle East is just not tenable, we
offer to move them to Texas, or Florida (where the language is spoken).
I would like to hear from Kossacks - either why I am dead wrong, or to start a drumbeat of Get Out Now - from Israel support.
