Forgive my rudeness, but
what in the hell is this?
In the event of a bird flu outbreak, U.S. money could be produced overseas and Americans checked in drive-through medical exams for signs of infection, according to government plans being finalized.
That was reported in the
WaPo yesterday although it is an AP report from none other than the
Pickler herself.
It goes on to quote that this is just "preliminary" information from yet another anonymous administration source. I understand the medical preparation plans, whatever they may be, but what on Earth is this plan to print dollars overseas?
Where would this occur? And which foreign country could be trusted enough to operate a printing press to make new dollars? It's not like printing a newspaper or something, making dollars is a complicated process that incorporates a lot of security features. The technology of how to make the paper is itself a secret.
And how would these dollars be shipped back to the United States? By plane? And what if one should crash, be hijacked or shot down? At what point is this some kind of feasible plan? Who would get the contract to do this?
Let's put it this way. If operating the current printing facility and transporting dollars (via armored trucks) is impossible to do after a bird flu outbreak, how would the dollars printed overseas be distributed? You still need the same number of guards and armored trucks. Would it really be so impossible to find enough employees to handle the printing press in America? Or enough companies to supply the necessary raw materials?
Something is definitely very, very odd about the whole thing. The bird flu may or may not reach pandemic proportions but even if it rose to the level of the the black plague I can't see how printing dollars overseas would be necessary. If 90 million people die from the bird flu (per the article), the economy would collapse. 90 million dead would also free up a heck of a lot of paper bills for the survivors to use as well.
I can't be the only one wondering why printing money overseas makes it to the top paragraph of a story from the administration's favorite AP reporter.
