Let's just imagine that President Bush was actually daring the Democrats to try and impeach him. So what could he do that would actually cause a response from the "what comes first is my getting reelected" Congress. Could he manufacture a war that has cost many American lives and injuries (along with tens of thousands of Iraqi lives) using false information? Would that bring about a solid statement? Or could he put us so far into debt that our grand children's grandchildren will be saddled with payments? Would that bring about forceful action from our elected representatives? Or could he consistently peck away at the Constitutional balance of powers by using signing statements and Presidential orders until the Constitution is deemed useless? Would that cause Congress to act? We could add volumes to this list of challenges for our Congress from our President and his Vice-President.
What is there about our representatives that makes them feel that their entrenchment is so important? I remember when that newly elected Republican Congress of the 90's was going for term limits come hell or high water. I thought it a bad idea at the time but now I realize my mistake. I don't think they were being representative. I fear that the newly elected Congress is beginning to show signs of saving their own asses first. I think they have a self-fulfilling prophecy about their importance. I do not feel that you should have to be a wealthy American to be elected to represent the people. Matter of fact I don't think that if you are wealthy that you could begin to understand the people. I don't think that any of them can't be replaced by another American that we simply pick from the white pages. So, I could care less if any of the front runner's win; we'd probably be better off if some solid American came out of nowhere to give a clear picture of what we could do about this mess that was created by a group thinking that they could micro-manage the world. You know when confronted with the horrors of nuclear war, everyone of us will be as equal as we ever have been or ever will be.
I just hope that some of our reps decide to throw away their aspirations of winning the next election and do something that will help us all be here for the next election. If you seriously look at what could happen to the Middle East because of our recklessness in Iraq it gets awfully scary. By the way, it has always been scary. When I was a kid it was the atomic threats and polio; then it was the Cuban Missile Crisis and the arms race. Then I grew and it became Vietnam. So, do we purposely have to be on brink?
