All right, so this was a couple years ago. But I think Wes Clark is the only candidate to have made the cover of a gay magazine, and probably the only general to have that honor, as well.
The cover shot is of The Advocate, February 3, 2004. Unlike Hillary and Obama, Clark isn't afraid to be a progressive.
Maybe that's because Wes Clark cares more about doing what's morally right than he does about personal fame and glory.
I mean, how much have Hillary, Obama, and Edwards really been doing for the country over the last four years?
Now contrast that with Clark, who campaigned continuously all over the country for congressional candidates, including Lieberman's opponent (unlike those triangulating presidential contenders). And the reason Clark isn't in the race yet, is because he's working hard behind the scenes to try to stop the Administration from starting a war in Iran. He and votevets have gotten together to create a website --- stopiranwar.com --- to further this effort.
But let's get back to gay rights. Here's what Clark had to say according to CNSnews.com February 4, 2004:
Retired Gen. Wesley Clark said that he "welcomed the [November 2003] Massachusetts court decision with open arms." Clark compared homosexual activists' quest to have their relationships recognized as "marriages" to the struggles of racial minorities seeking civil rights in the 1950s.
"Growing up in Little Rock in the 1950s, I saw first-hand how wrenching the fight for civil rights was," Clark wrote on his campaign website.
"In too many ways, the struggle for equal rights is still on-going. Today, one of the frontlines in the civil rights struggle runs through the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) community," Clark continued. "We must always stand by the principle: every American should enjoy the exact same rights as every other American."
