...building on Major Danby's diary from Tuesday,
Let’s get some details cleared up here.
We need to find out if our individual Congressperson
- Supports/ doesn’t support funding the upcoming supplemental Iraq War funding request
2 Supports/ doesn’t support funding annual Iraq War funding request (later in 2007)
3 Supports/doesn’t support the Murtha Plan
more
Let’s figure out EXACTLY where our Congresscritters stand on the best way to end the Iraq War, shall we? Building on the diary by Major Danby a coupla days ago, let’s give ourselves several days to make the definitive list of What our Democratic Congress is Thinking. When completed, it will provide the springboard for focused action and attention. Or, as MD puts it:
identifying representatives' positions on defunding, assessing our status and, if defunding looks possible, figuring out whose votes we need to get and targeting those representatives for lobbying
Step 1: Contact your rep. www.house.gov . Feel free to use the following text as a guide for phone/email.
Democrats have a majority of votes in the House. All appropriations must begin in the House. Therefore, refusing to approve any additional funding for the war, beyond the costs of withdrawal by a date certain, is the one way that a united Democratic caucus could stop the war in Iraq without worrying about a filibuster, overriding a veto of legislation, or Presidential non-compliance with conditions on funding.
President Bush has already made a supplemental funding request and will offer another annual funding request later this year. I want to know whether Rep. ________ supports funding for either or both of these requests beyond the cost of withdrawal. I'd also like to know if Rep. _____ favors adding the restrictions Rep. Murtha had proposed to any funding authorization that may eventually be passed.
Step 2: Determine your Rep’s position using the following guidelines in the key, and post it in the comments or email me, and I’ll update the chart below. Here is the chart key:
"Yes" signifies favors funding
"No" signifies opposes funding
"Undecided" signifies stated equivocation
"N/A" signifies no statement available
"Leans" may precede "yes" or "no"
"SUPP" signifies upcoming supplemental Iraq War funding request
"ANNUAL" signifies annual Iraq War funding request (later in 2007)
"PRO-MURTHA" signifies the Murtha Plan (yes or no)
Here is the chart, lovingly handcrafted by Major Danby, badly needing info:

One more thing, post any names that have publicly announced answers to our questions, too. Preferably with links. Blue Dog Losers come to mind, for example. And Murtha (duh). Stuff like that. This way, our rage can be focused on the specific people who deserve it most. I think positive reinforcement to those pols who support de-funding, and targeted criticism to those who don't, is the best way to move forward. I don't believe blanket criticism of the party as a whole moves us forward with the speed needed. I do not want a Nader redux in 08, I want to minimize fracture. This coming from a gal who pulled the lever for Ralph in 00.
Allrighty then. Have at it. Hypnotoad commands you.
