When some wingnut says something outrageous, don't attack the indivdual or the tiny wingnut group he's a member of. Attack the Rethuglican Party. For example: "Republicans want to stop extra-marital sex so much that they want more women to get cervical cancer. That's why the Republicans are trying to stop a vaccine that prevents it."
Democrats need to do this over and over and over. Here's why:
Every single time we do this, the Repukes will have to trot out some spokesperson to say this or that person doesn't represent the Rethug party. Pat Robertson saying filibusters are worse than Hitler? Make the Repukes disown him. Those extreme stands some of the nominated judges have taken? Accuse the Rethugs of being extremists and use the judges as examples.
This accomplishes two things: Showing the fundies they don't really have a home in the rethug party will make them more likely to stay at home on election day or split off and form their own party. The stench of the rotting bird will also turn off those all-important swing voters.
Actually, it accomplishes a third thing: It takes away the initiative and puts the Rethugs on the defensive.
Second, single out all of the moderate Rethugs for defeat and launch very, very high-profile attacks using funding from the national Congressional and Senate campaign funds. Why? Simple. Snowe, Collins, et al. may be moderates but they are in the service of extremism because they are keeping the fundie-backed GOP in the majority. If the voters in their states want to support moderate polices, they will have to abandon their GOP senators and representatives. Maybe some of them will even convert.
Beyond that, though, the press coverage will be helpful. "Why are you singling out Olympia Snowe, who often votes with Democrats?"
"We're sorry to have to do it, but she is helping keep extremist leadership in the Senate."
(This is my first diary. Originally, it was going to be a comment on a thread, but it got too long. Sorry if it's stupid or if this isn't what diaries are supposed to be.)
