Matt Lauer and the rest of the folks at the Today Show seem to be unaware of the fact that Democrats control the Senate and the House. What else could explain this morning's coverage of the Senate vote yesterday to set a deadline to bring the troops home. Lauer started off saying the vote initiated a "game of political chicken" and then aired a lengthy clip of John McCain calling the decision shameful.
Two brief clips from the Senate floor showed Senator Hagel, one of only two Republicans who voted with the Dems and Barack Obama simply saying "I was against the war from the beginning". Then some red-bearded douchebag told us that "McCain is a maverick for voting with the minority."
Meredith Vieira took us to a live and lengthy interview with McCain where he was allowed to repeat his "any 2nd year cadet knows you don't tell the enemy when you're leaving" garbage. She grilled him about his fundraising, which had absolutely nothing to do with yesterday's vote.
It's important for everyone to let the Today Show know that in case they haven't noticed, the Dems are in charge of Congress now. We would like to hear from the leaders who represent all of us, not just John McCain.
Why is the Today Show important? Because that's where everyday people (not political junkies like ourselves) get the news. It seeps in with the coffee, the cereal and the getting the kids to school. And it's where they form their opinions.
Here is a verision of the e-mail that I wrote. I suggest you do the same.
In case you haven't noticed, Democrats are in control of the House and the Senate. Why not interview some of them on your show?
Your coverage this morning of the Senate vote to withdraw from Iraq by April, 2008 included a lengthy on-camera interview with John McCain, a long clip of his speech on the Senate floor and someone saying "McCain is a maverick because he voted against the withdrawal." You did not interview a single Democrat who supported the vote .... In fact, nowhere in your broadcast did you indicate why the vote was taken or how the Democrats got the bill through.
Your coverage is appalling. A Democratic led Congress is finally forcing this reckless administration to answer to the will of the American people and end a war that was started under false pretenses, yet Matt Lauer started the segment calling the vote a "game of political chicken." It's not a game. It's Democracy.
You should be ashamed of your biased and excessive coverage of a Republican candidate for president. You are not journalists or even talk show hosts. You are Republican hacks.
