Many of you have already seen the video of Ann Coulter at the CPAC Conference where in her attempt to trash Democratic Presidential Candidate John Edwards, she employed the most despicable form of hate language. What is even more disturbing is that her comment was received by applause.
This type of bigotry should be shunned and that is precisely what the Edwards campaign has done.
David Bonior, Campaign Manager for John Edwards for President, sent an email last night denouncing Ann Coulter’s vile remarks:
Excerpts from recent Edwards for President Email
Did you hear about Anne Coulter's speech this afternoon attacking John? A friend just forwarded me the video and it's one of the worst moments in American politics I've seen.
I can't bring myself to even repeat her comments. Her shameless display of bigotry is so outrageous you actually have to see for yourself to believe.
Coulter's attack was no accident. It happened on national television at one of the year's biggest conservative conferences. Dick Cheney and most of the Republican candidates were in the audience. She was even introduced by Mitt Romney.
John was singled out for a personal attack because the Republican establishment knows he poses the greatest threat to their power. Since they have nothing real to use against him, Coulter's resorting to the classic right-wing strategy of riling up hate to smear a progressive champion. And the Republican attack dogs will keep playing this despicable trick as long as they think it works.
Bonior went on to ask us to donate to a"Coulter Cash" fund. He’s right. We need to put our money where our mouth is.
It’ up to us to show the rightwing smear machine that the progressive netroots is not only about sitting around and bitching. We mean what we say and are willing to take action.
If you choose not to donate to the Edwards campaign, please donate to a GLBT Rights Organization. Fighting back is about more than blogging...it’s about empowering campaigns and organizations who have the power to bring about systemic changes. And that takes cash.
I donated to the Edwards campaign, because I have no doubts that the "Coulter Cash" being raised by the Edwards campaign, will promote progressive causes.
Edwards has proven time and time again, that he is willing to stand up for progressive causes such as Universal Health Care and moving America away from our dependence on foreign oil.
Just a few days ago, John Edwards issued a statement in support of legislation to repeal "Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell" proposed by Rep. Martin Meehan, D-Mass.
On the heels of that statement, Coulter, serving as a mouthpiece for the rightwing, resorted to a tried and true conservative tactic of using a wedge to appeal to the lowest common denominator of their party members.
As Democrats, we are opposed to hate language and other forms of bigotry and we’re ready and willing to stand up for our GLBT brothers and sisters.
Injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere.
