My partner and I have three accounts at Washington Mutual, and the LGBT nonprofit I volunteer with has its money with Wamu as well. I was inspired by VolvoDrivingLiberal's diary about AnnCoulter.com advertisers to take action and ask Wamu why they thought it was good business sense to let people associate Washington Mutual with Ann Coulter.
I also contacted many of the advertisers and ad companies listed and sent them a version of this letter.
Washington Mutual's online comment form doesn't allow double quotes, for crying out loud. It took me forever to "scrub" my message until it would accept it.
It has come to my attention that Washington Mutual buys advertising space on AnnCoulter.com.
This has only recently come to my attention due to an uproar over comments Coulter made on March 2, 2007 at the Conservative Political Action Conference. Many people were deeply offended at her comments about Democratic Presidential candidate John Edwards. I will quote them for you.
.....
I was going to have a few comments on the other Democratic presidential candidate John Edwards, but it turns out you have to go into rehab if you use the word faggot, so I... so kind of an impasse, can't really talk about Edwards.
.....
I do not know how long you have been supporting Ann Coulter by purchasing ad space on her site, but let me inform you in case you were not aware that this is only the latest in a series of hate-filled and offensive comments from her.
I would appreciate an explanation of why you feel Ms. Coulter is a person you would like me to associate with your bank.
I await your prompt response.
If I get any response, I'll be sure to share it.
