FITZMAS DAY
(Think Alvin and the Chipmunks)
Fitzmas time is here my friends
To jail Libby we will send
Oh! How I love a holiday
Like Fitzmas...Fitzmas Day!
They lied to you, they lied to me
They leaked a covert agent's identity
But don't feel sad and don't be blue
'Cause Fiztmas Day's come true!
Yes, Fitzmas time has come to pass
Each day for Cheney could be his last
It's both a sad and celebratory day
"Hurray" for Fitzmas Day!
"Hurray" for Fitzmas Day.
"Hurray".
This is my first attempt at song composition and publication. I'm more of a stream of consiousness ranter, truth be told. But there's some social commentary to be mined in this fiasco.
Is the jury's guilty verdict something to cheer about? For me it's grind my teeth and set my jaw time. How much nastier does it get than the Chief of Staff of the VP being convicted of lying to the FBI to cover up his involvement, and the involvement of others, in outing a covert CIA opperative? Well, an illegal war probably tops it, but that's not really what were talking about here is it? Or at least not all of it.
Bush, Cheney and their extremist friends have done great (I don't want to say irreparable) harm to this country. I believe it's a disgrace that they continue to serve. Is that who we've become? Is that tollerable? Acceptable? Commendable?
So far the most honest comments I've heard about what's happened to our country over the past 5+ years are Senator Hagel's yesterday in Esquire magazine. I won't quote him here, sufice it to say that we were all so afraid that we've allowed the unimaginable to be done in our name. And it's worse than our worst nightmares.
Yesterday's verdict validated our efforts to get our troops out of Iraq. But bluster and bravado shouldn't be how we spend the capital we've gained, because smugness doesn't wear well on anyone. A little release is okay. I pumped my fist and let out a little nervous energy. I get it, as I hope my song shows.
But this really isn't the time for celebrations. It's time to take a good long look in the mirror and ask if what we see there is what we see in our mind's eye. To paraphrase Thoroeau, if you can describe the type of country you want to live in you'll be a step closer to getting there. The rest of the way is up to you.
