Louisiana Lt. Gov. Mitch Landrieu has ruled out a race for governor. He is the third major Democrat to pass on the race which currently shows GOP Congressman Bobby Jindal with a wide lead in the polls. Gov. Kathleen Blanco previously had decided not to seek a second term and former U.S. Sen. John Breaux considered running for the state's top spot and announced last week he would not be a candidate.
From NOLA Blog:
The ranks of possible Democratic candidates for governor grew thinner Monday as Lt. Gov. Mitch Landrieu announced that he would seek re-election to his current post.
Landrieu's decision came just two days after former U.S. Sen. John Breaux decided to forgo a run. Breaux was considering the race after Democratic incumbent Kathleen Blanco announced March 20 that she would not seek a second term.
"After much serious consideration and prayer, I have decided to run for re-election as lieutenant governor," Landrieu said in a written statement. "In this time of unique challenges for our state, I believe I can best serve the people of Louisiana by finishing the job I started four years ago."
As stated above, three major Democratic candidates have passed on this race in the last few weeks. There are three candidates, according to the press down here, still being mentioned as possible candidates:
State Treasurer John Kennedy
Former AG Richard Ieyoub
Former Congressman Chris John
There IS one candidate running for Democratic nomination ... PSC Commisioner Foster Campbell
So far, it's been an interesting, although disappointing campaign season for many Democrats. Hopefully, come November, we'll have something to be excited about.
