I read DailyKos every day, but I have never posted a diary. I am a '92 Civil Engineering Virginia Tech alum and wanted to share my memories of one of my professors and I appreciate having the DailyKos community to share them with.
I had a lot of classes on the second floor of Norris Hall, so I am sure that I have been in the classrooms where this tragedy occurred many times. One of my professors was G.V. Loganathan, who was one of the victims in the tragedy. I had a hydraulics class with him and really respected his abilities as a teacher.
The profile on Professor Loganathan on washingtonpost.com said he "took time to get to know every student." It was really true. I remember on the first day of class Professor Loganathan had a photographer come to the class to take a picture of the class from the front of the room. He then had us fill our names into a seating chart. Professor Loganathan must have studied the photograph and seating chart quite a bit because within a short period of time, he called on us by name without any hesitation to think of the name. No other professor that I had cared that much about learning our names.
Professor Loganathan clearly loved his job. I haven't seen him in person since I graduated in '92, but I have followed his career in the alumni magazine that the Civil Engineering department sends. As soon as I heard about the shootings and that they were in Norris Hall, I immediately thought about Professor Loganathan and had a sick feeling. I am sure that Professor Loganathan died doing what he loved, but that doesn't help me feel any less sad.
