Syria has just sentenced Anwar al-Bunni, a leading human rights lawyer, to five years in prison. His crime: "spreading false information" that Syria practices torture.

The New York Times reports that the sentencing of al-Bunni is part of Syria's campaign to intimidate the opposition movement into abandoning any attempts to pursue democracy.
There have been a lot of posts lately criticizing Israel, but the extreme authoritarianism of nations like Syria too often goes unmentioned.
Syria remains a brutal dictatorship, where the kind of free expression we value here at dailykos is ruthlessly suppressed.
We should be outraged on behalf of Mr. al-Bunni, and everyone forced to live under these conditions.
