VIGIL and showing of THE IRON WALL
Vigil for Palestine in St. Mark's May 18
Vigil: 5:00 - 6:00 soup: 6-6:30
Film: THE IRON WALL, produced in Palestine
THE IRON WALL provides graphic evidence of the intentions of Zionist leaders: "Zionist colonization must . . .proceed regardless of the native population . . . which means putting them behind an iron wall that the native population cannot breach." J. Jabotinsky, 1923
"The settlement of the Land of Israel is the essence of Zionism. Without settlement, we will not fulfill Zionism." Yitzhak Shamir, 1997
"Everybody has to move, run and grab as many hilltops as they can . . . everything we take now will stay ours . . . Everything we don't grab will go to them." Ariel Sharon, 1998
Vigil & movie sponsored by the Episcopal Peace Fellowship

The Theater Squad will present the "Occupation Game" at Cal Anderson Park
At 2:00 on Saturday June 10, the Theater Squad will also present an outdoor processional performance of Hurriyeh, an adaptation of Sophocles' Antigone. Hurriyeh tells a story of the conflict between the need for security and the rebellion against unjust laws. The Occupation Game and Hurriyeh will be presented outdoors, rain or shine.
Who is the Seattle Palestine Solidarity Committee?
The Seattle Palestine Solidarity Committee supports all Palestinians in their struggle for the fundamental right of self-determination. They indicate that they work to end the Israeli occupation of the West Bank, including East Jerusalem, and the Gaza Strip and for the establishment of an independent, democratic Palestinian state. They also support the provision of full human and other rights to all Palestinians living as minorities or refugees anywhere in the world and the right of all Palestinian refugees to choose compensation or return to Palestine.
Towards this end, they try to influence the United States government to change its policies with regard to the Middle East. How? They call for an end to US military and economic aid to Israel, while Israel violates international law by engaging in a consistent pattern of gross and systematic human rights abuses against Palestinians. They urge the US government to condemn these abuses and exert pressure on Israel to remove Israeli settlers from all occupied territory, return confiscated land, end the occupation, and allow the formation of the Palestinian State.
The events show that liberal Democrats, who have their roots in the civil rights movement of the 1960s, are willing to confront injustice whenever it is found, whether at home or in American foreign policy. Democrats cannot follow the Republicans by ignoring matters pertaining to human rights.
