According to RAW story, via the Washington Times, NY City mayor Michael Bloomberg is rumored to dedicate one billion dollars to a presidential campaign, and some close to the mayor say Bloomberg is like "Ross Perot on Steroids", and will make the run for president. According to former FEC chairman Michael Toner, a Bloomberg run would turn the political landscape on its ear, plus he can spend as much money as he wants to, and then proceed to the general election.
While Toner insists that no decision has been made, Bloomberg has recently talked with Nebraska Sen. Chuck Hagel, and has met with Perot's tops aides when Perot ran for president in 1992.
I have to agree with Toner. If Bloomberg decides to give this thing a try, both the Democrats and Republicans will be hard pressed to stop this train from leaving the station. Back in 1992, Perot received 19% of the vote, and did so even when Perot made a fool of himself, dropped out of the race, then several days later, came back in.
With 8 years of misery and failure of the Bush administration, and millions of voters disatisfied with both parties, a Bloomberg run could make sense to a lot of people. To top that, a recent poll had Bloomberg being a much better mayor than Rudy Guiliani.
Now I know third party candidates usually don't do well, but I am worried that if Bloomberg does run, he could siphon off enough votes that would go to the Democrats to elect the Republican, which would mean at least 4 more years of misery.
Am I overblowing this, or do you feel like I feel?
