There is already a good diary on the board specifically about melamine and chickens, but I don't think this is duplication because it is a different look from a different angle.
Moreover, knowing what to do about your food safety is important. There is a broader lesson to take from the ballad of melamine pet poisons;
As pointed out in yesterday's Washington Post:
"adding melamine to pet food ingredients -- now blamed for the deaths of many animals in the United States and possible contamination of the human food supply -- is but the latest technique for fooling U.S. companies into thinking they are purchasing a high-quality product."
"About 99 percent of imported foods are simply acknowledged by computer and waved ashore."
And, "The task of guarding against contaminants in imports has become far more complicated because an increasing portion of the tens of billions of dollars in Chinese food and agricultural imports involves powders and concentrates for the processed-food industry."
So the business of corruption-for-cash isn't only a North American phenomenon, there should be FAR greater cautions and monitoring of imported foods, and whether you realize it or not, your local non-corporate farmer might be one of your very best friends.
