Robert Greenwald and Brave New Films (full disclosure: Brave New Films co-founder is Courage Campaign chair Rick Jacobs) have launched a new petition drive to impeach attorney general Alberto Gonzales for his abuse of power in the firing of US attorneys.
The reason this scandal is so important is that Gonzales was at the center of a plan to suppress votes -- in particular, to suppress the votes of non-white people in the United States. Michael Ditto has a piece today explaining this connection between Attorneygate and vote suppression, and Richard Hanson at Slate.com has another great piece on the Republican-generated "crisis" over "voter fraud" which is a complete myth used to suppress votes. This Republican strategy is not just anti-Democratic (big-D), it's anti-democratic (small-d) and racist.
I wrote a few weeks ago on why "Attorneygate" matters to us as Californians. We in California were particularly grateful for the work of former US Attorney Carol Lam, who served the southern district of our state. Ms. Lam brought Randy "Duke" Cunningham to justice after he accepted bribes and sold out the people he was elected to represent. Lam was working on another corruption case, involving Republican Congressman Jerry Lewis, when she was abruptly fired by the Bush Administration. Let's take action and together we can do what President Bush refuses to do: fire Gonzales!
