There is a simple strategy to deal with Iraq and Bush -- and avoid being accused of "not supporting the troops. Fund a withdrawal of the troops.
Forget timelines, benchmarks, deauthorizing the war, and the rest of that crap. Make the debate solely over whether Bush is going to abandon the troops by passing a funding measure for Iraqi troops from which the funds can only be used as part of an strategy guaranteeing the safe and orderly withdrawal of American troops in a given (six months? nine months?) time frame.
There is more than sufficient support for this proposal to get it passes the House, and if the House stands firm and makes it clear to the Liebermannequins among the Senate Democrats that they are willing to blame THEM for abandoning the troops.
A few weak-kneed Democratic Senators were the problem -- a problem that is tearing apart the Democratic Party at this very moment. Put THEM on the spot by making it clear that the House Democrats "support the troops" and want them home safely, and Senator who votes against the bill will be branded as NOT supporting the safe return of our troops.
The House of Representatives is the People's House, and the People have spoken. Fund a withdrawal from Iraq, and forget the rest of the nonsense.
