So this whole Mudcat flap has been going on for a few days now, and it got me thinking, "What in the hell is a 'political consultant' anyways?"
It seems to me that this is one of those made up jobs that someone has scammed other people into thinking actually serves a purpose. And yet, looking at the record of most of the "professional" consultants on the D side, there's something striking...
Why the hell are you going to take political advice from someone who has never personally won an election or held office?
Even someone who has is of questionable usefulness.
So, for the 10 people who read my diaries, if any of you are ever thinking of running for office, here's my "free political consulting:"
- If you want advice on how to connect with rural voters, go out to a rural area and talk to some voters.
- If you're facing a tough decision based on competing value judgements, decide which value you hold more strongly and then make the call based on principle and integrity.
- If someone comes to you offering the professional service of telling you what to do so you can get elected, and you think that sounds pretty good, then you don't need to be in office. If you're not willing to share what you're really going to do in office with your voters, you should be selling used cars to old people, not sitting in Congress or whatever.
- Don't eat the yellow snow.
