Only 45 votes for anti-gay side.
I have complete faith that you'll finish this diary. Short diaries without substance are a pet peeve of mine, so I'm glad to know there's more coming. I'll check back later.
Hehehehe... OK, here goes.
There's very little I could add on the momentousness of today's events, so I'll add a personal story instead.
I knew a very close, very dear friend of mine... he planned to get married this fall. (He lived in Massachusetts, along with his partner, both of whom were HIV+)
Unfortunately, he didn't make it. He died on April 7th, due to complictions involving pneumonia. I planned to write his rep., who was just elected this past November, replacing an anti-gay Democrat who had declined to seek reelection, to tell him the story of my friend, and how he would never get the chance to have his marriage recognized in the only state in which it was possible, his home state.
I have been extremely stressed out and never actually got to mailing out the letter. I did make his surviving partner aware of the situation, and told him that contacting the newly elected rep. was my dear departed friend's list of things to do (he never got a chance before he passed). I was never actually as close to his partner as I was to him, so I never got a chance to check in to see if he had gotten in touch with the rep. Time, of course, was of the essence.
I just found out that the rep. did indeed vote against the amendment. I'm not sure if the surviving partner did get a chance to talk to the rep. But, of course, the rep did the right thing in the end.
Please, if you can, support Geraldo Alicea for reelection.
