Obviously, based on Bush's refusal to adhere to the subpoenas, the administration has no respect for laws that run contrary to their agenda.
President Bush, moving toward a constitutional showdown with Congress, asserted executive privilege Thursday and rejected lawmakers' demands for documents that could shed light on the firings of federal prosecutors.
As Kagro X did on the front page of Daily Kos, let's revisit the words of Nancy Pelosi from October of last year:
Pelosi was asked what was most important about regaining majority status. "Subpoena power," she said.
Well, Congress...
What now?
There are a several politicians that post on Daily Kos. We've seen Boxer, Slaughter, Kerry, Edwards, and Feingold to name just a few (I'm sure I missed several). We know that the Democratic party checks the blogs and pays at the very least cursory attention to what bloggers have to say. So, I'm going to go ahead and ask for the answer to one simple question:
What now?
What will you do now that the President has once again chosen to ignore Congress, to ignore your demands, to spit in the face of the American people? What is your next move?
Are we going to be treated to another vote, another debate, on whether or not to send the President a stern letter of reprimand, a letter that says "We're not mad, we're disappointed"?
Will we have to watch the death count in Iraq grow higher and higher as the President simply avoids any and all accountability?
I'm aware that it's only been about 6 months that you've been in power, and 6 months is not enough time to fix the horrors and destruction of 6 years of incompetent rule. I know it takes time, which is why I'm demanding answers.
Let's not forget the sacrifices that the American people made to get you elected. I personally donated close to $1000 dollars during the election cycle, when I clearly could not afford it. Other members of Daily Kos recounted similar stories during the election cycle. Donations poured in, everyone squeezed every single dime they possibly could to try and retake Congress. One story that will always stick with me is that one person actually cancelled their child's violin lessons so they could send in another 40 dollars per week (details may be off, but lessons of some sort were cancelled).
Imagine that. A parent who was so distressed with the direction our country was heading, who was scared for their child and the sort of country they would grow up in, sacrificed a child's lessons to donate money to help our country.
The sacrifices and dedication we've shown is not up for debate. It's not up for question, it's not allowed to be measured. It's simply fact. We have done everything we can to try and help. We helped elect a Democratic Congress. We've marched, we've phoned in, we've written letters, we've protested. We have done our part, Congress. Now it's your turn.
Bush is clearly not going to just obey. He's not going to cooperate, he's not going to do what is right. He's sacrificed thousands of American lives and untold thousands of Iraqi lives, all for his pride, his hubris. Subpoena power was a wonderful dream, but only as long as it has teeth. It needs force, it needs bite.
So, tell me Congress. When are you going to stop barking and start biting?
When are you going to live up to the promises that got you elected?
When will you serve the people who sacrificed whatever they could to help our country?
What now, Congress?
