I am a huge John Edwards supporter, donating money and spreading the word that John Edwards is the best candidate for President. However something has been bothering me lately. As a gay young man, I take gay issues seriously (although it isn't my make or break issue). Since I am not poor, nor do I need health insurance, I do not fight in Iraq, and I am pretty well off financially, gay rights is the issue that I can be most directly affected by.
So you can imagine my disappointment hearing that in Bob Shrum's book, he tells of how Edwards really has had a hard time coming around to support gays. Who knows how much of Shrum we can believe, but the point remains. Also, on CNN last night, he claims gays should not be married, but 'wouldnt let his personal views get in the way of policy". Then he said that marriages/civil unions should be left up to states (in the debate). That is all fine and good, but it brings up something that John mentioned in the debate--the role of leadership.
I am starting to think Hillary is the better candidate to lead gay rights into the 21st century. John always talks about dual society of rich and poor, black and white, etc. But where is his compassionate leadership on the gay/straight divide? I think John should meet with gay leaders and have a town hall discussion with a group of prominent gay citizens so he can get everything out in the open. He should be honest about how he has evolved his position and what he truly will do as President for the gay community. He should also hear first hand accounts of discriminations and portrayals of love and committed gay relationships. Until then, I won't donate any more money to Edwards. Make a stand, John, it is the right thing to do!
My relationship with my partner is just as strong and amazing as John's relationship with Elizabeth. I find it somewhat hypocritcal of his standing up for the little guy, those without a voice, and he isn't taking the lead on standing up for gay Americans. Will he buckle under pressure as president and not make advancing gay rights a priority? Since I am not poor, nor do I need health insurance, I do not fight in Iraq, and I am pretty well off financially, gay rights is the issue that I can be most directly affected by. Should I invest my money in a candidate that won't stand up for me?
