As everyone makes plans to travel to visit loved ones, eat copious amounts of food, or just stay at home, relax, and watches a movie on DVD, keep in mind that today's not just about getting a day off from work...it's about a whole lot more...
This flag and the country it represents belong to no one political party, no one person, no one group. It's a symbol that has remained iconic for centuries and it seems that, with the pardon (let's call it what it is folks) of Lewis "Scooter" Libby, the laws and rights that were created by the founders continue to slip away into a dark chasm of nothingness, and if we don't take a stand, this country will forever be known as the one that allowed robber barons to steal away the freedoms and thoughts of many to serve the ideologies and bank accounts of few.
The Democrats are no better. They were elected to lead but instead they're acting like scared children, unwilling to do the job the electorate entrusted them to do: end the Iraq war. And now, with yet another item added to the laundry list of horrible things this administration has done to this country, it is time to impeach the corrupt, amoral George W. Bush and his puppetmaster, Dick Cheney. About impeachment, Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi recently said in a conference call, "Well, yeah, the Constitution is worth it if you can succeed." That's totally inexcusable; this isn't a sports event, in which you just keep your eyes on the clock and wait until it ticks down to September 2007 or November 2008 - this is matter of life and death, of preserving what makes this country great, and holding guilty parties accountable. If Democrats want to sit on their hands and whisper, we'll gladly grab a bullhorn.
It's time to stop mincing words and make our voices heard. For far too long, we've sat idly by and let deceit after corruption after treason slip past us, with nary a peep from the peanut gallery. The time to talk is over. The time to act is now. This country deserves better than those who proclaim to be above the law and subservient to no one. It needs a united voice standing up against all who've betrayed what this nation was founded on and it needs it now. Unless we rise up and reclaim the United States of America, reclaim it in the name of democracy, the fourth of July will just be a day of the week in which fireworks are set off, hot dogs and burgers are grilled, and minds are closed off, allowing the vicious circle to continue until we as a nation slide off the cliff into a sad, willful, ignorant oblivion.
As Canadian singer/songwriter Bruce Cockburn said..
"But nothing worth having comes without some kind of fight --
Got to kick at the darkness 'til it bleeds daylight"
It's time we find our feet, put on our shoes, and get to work.
