Say one thing, do another.

From today's NY Daily News:
. . . British Prime Minister Gordon Brown reassured President Bush yesterday his country is still a steady partner, but also signaled his intent to pull his 5,500 troops from Iraq.
On his first visit since taking office, Brown said the right things to reassure Bush the "special relationship" with the U.S. lives on in the post-Tony Blair era.
"I do see this relationship strengthening in the years to come, because it is the values that we believe in that I think will have the most impact as we try to solve the problems that we face right across the world," Brown said in a joint news conference at Camp David.
Brown's tone was in contrast to his cabinet's vow to distance itself from U.S. foreign policy.
Brown portrayed his Iraq pullout plans as the result of a relatively successful mission by British forces. . .
I guess it's the old "declare victory and pull out" from the Vietnam years.
Seriously, the "say one thing and do another" is exactly what the U.S. should have been doing since 9/12/01. In other words, make nice with everyone for the media, while simultaneously going after the fomenters of terrorism quietly, effectively and lethally.
Instead, our crack foreign policy team, led by Crazy Dick Cheney and the PNAC crowd, decided to declare "war on terror" and thus elevate a loosely affiliated group of criminals to the status of nation state. Osama's PR agency was thrilled!
Imagine how different the world would be today if someone like - say - Wesley Clark had been in charge of U.S. foreign policy.
Makes me want to cry.
