What if we can’t get rid of Bush and Cheney by impeachment? What if the members of the House of Representatives continue to dishonor their oaths to preserve, protect and defend the Constitution? What then?
There is an option available that doesn’t require anyone in Washington, D.C. to do anything for us. Which is good, because they probably won’t.
Here’s the thing. It’s all in the Declaration of Independence. It says that people form governments to protect their unalienable rights. ("That to secure these rights, Governments are instituted among Men"). Furthermore, the government has no legitimate powers by right except for those assigned to it by the people. ("deriving their just powers from the consent of the governed").
I don’t know about you, but I didn’t consent to warrantless wiretapping. I didn’t consent to torture, or an ongoing occupation of Iraq. I didn’t consent to an attorney general who denigrates habeas corpus. Nor did I ever approve of secret prisons. In fact, I could assemble a whole list of grievances as long at that in the Declaration against an earlier King George.
So here’s what we can do: withdraw our consent.
For the millions who don’t consent, why don’t we sign and deliver a petition? And then, we could just stand in the streets until this illegitimate government steps down. You think this wouldn’t work? How could the government continue to operate if we simply refuse to cooperate?
"I hereby withdraw my consent to this government which has failed in its most fundamental responsibility—to protect our unalienable rights." Please join me.
