The Sacaramento Bee is reporting tonight that 'arch- conservative' Republican Representative John Doolittle is calling for our troops to pull back from its military role in Iraq and let the Iraqi Army take over combat operations.
Doolittle described the war as a 'quaqmire' on Thursday and at a town hall meeting made the call for American troops to withdraw from the front line.
Doolittle has been a long time supporter of Bush and the war in Iraq. His public defection along with other staunch Republicans of late is significant because it underscores the deep divisions in the Repbulican party for the war. For leading Republican hawks to publically voice a parting of the ways with BushCo. over the war is significant...and hopefully, will translate into votes when the Democrats try again to make somekind of legislative move to end the war.

hattip to Talking Points Memo for reporting this.
UPDATE
WaPo has posted a story on Pete Domenici's change of heart over the Iraq war with this heartbreaking quote
Domenici described to reporters the pleading tone he hears in phone calls with grieving families. He told of an exchange with one father, whom he quoted as saying: "I'm asking you if you couldn't do a little extra, a little more, to see if you can't get the troops back. Mine is dead, but I would surely hope that you would listen to me and try to get the rest of them back sooner."
