We continue to talk about impeachment and removal from office for both POTUS and VPOTUS, but we've got to do more. We need to start people talking about who should serve out the last 12-18 months of Bush's Presidency. Rather than argue over the ground of whether or not they should be impeached, we need to start seeing polls about who you would support to replace them.
This accomplishes the impeachment in the mind before the first vote is cast. Let people begin thinking about life after Bush, and Bush recedes in the rear view mirror, losing power and moving the debate onto the next phase.
The calls for Pelosi in '07 seem counterproductive, simply because the Republicans probably won't vote to turn the Presidency over to Democrats, except as discussed below.
That's why I'm supporting McCain in '07.
If we're quite serious about this, we need to find someone who has the experience, would be an acceptable Republican, and yet wouldn't have an egg's chance on a skillet of doing any damage to the Democrats. We also need to find someone ho would take the job.
McCain is cutting staff and has already slipped to third in the polls. He knows his shot at office is gone. He's also been stabbed in the back by the Bush family so many times that he'd be happy to take the keys to the White House. (Sidenote, anyone know if there are actual keys to the White House?) He's not one of the rabid nuts who'd destroy the Constitution, though I think he probably wouldn't do much to correct the current damage.
There are a few more choices that would instantly jump to mind, and a few other oddball strategies like moving a Democrat from the Senate into the White House and replacing them with a Republican, turning control of the Senate over to the Republicans. I doubt the Republicans would go for that simply because they are almost certain to lose seats in '08, and lose the Senate again.
But if we're going to talk about Impeachment, we need to talk about realistic replacement strategies. And those discussions seeping into the mainstream will help to pull the impeachment process rather than just push it. So who do you like?
