Tony, I just saw your interview with David Gregory. I sincerely hope that you beat this cancer, and I hope you do bounce your grandchildren on your knee. However,
Tony, wouldn't it be great if you could give your children a proud legacy? You could leave them a legacy, whether your remaining time is great or little, that will stand the test of time. Tony, I know that you are a smart man. I know you know in your heart that what you go out and tell the WHPC every day is absolutely pure bu##*$it! I know that you are smart enough to know that we are not making great progress in Iraq. I know you understand that what Scooter Libby did was wrong, and that what W did is an even worse wrong. I know you know this.
I know you know that Alberto Gonzalez is a disgrace to his office and that he has used his position to help fulfill Karl Rove’s promise to make the Republican Party the dominant party. He has politicized the Department of Justice. He has lied to Congress and thus, has committed a crime. I am certain that you know this, deep down.
I know that you are clever enough to know that this administration has sanctioned, if not directed, torture and secret rendition. I believe you, too, understand that the Patriot Act and this latest FISA fiasco are assaults on the Constitution.
I am sure you see that there is something very fishy about the cover-up of Pat Tillman’s death, and that the officers involved did not take it on themselves to conduct it. They had to have direction from on high. Surely you can see this.
I know within my heart of hearts that you clearly understand what you are doing. Are you really willing to so connect yourself to a President with a 26% approval rating with little prospect of its ever being higher? Are you sure that you want your name listed in the history books beside the name of the most corrupt, incompetent, criminal President who ever held the office? Do you really want your children to have to see your name so closely tied to what history will undoubtedly pronounce to be the worst administration in the wonderful annals of this country?
Wouldn’t you rather have them see you as being one of the principled men who stepped away, refusing to further be a party to such an outrage? Wouldn’t you like for them proudly proclaim that you are their father, one who allowed principle to overrule practice? One who was willing to walk away from, what I am sure is a lucrative position, because he suddenly realized what his place in history was likely to be if he continued? Wouldn’t it be wonderful to know that your most precious gift to your children, your name, would be one that would instill pride and reverence in them, rather than the shame that will be associated with your name because of your occupation in these last few years?
Wouldn’t you, Tony? There’s still time.
