Bye, Bye Karl
By Vic Wulsin
This past Monday, Karl Rove announced his departure from the White House, and I am anything but sad about it. Mr. Rove, who was President Bush's closest advisor, has been a profoundly harmful force in American politics. I am running for Congress in the 2nd district because our government should put people before politics. For over six years in the White House, Mr. Rove did just the opposite.
Time and time again, Rove sought to divide the country- to marginalize his opponents with blunt and misleading characterizations- or worse. Americans who opposed and continue to oppose the ill-conceived and mismanaged Iraq War were called cowards, cut-and-runners, and terrorist-sympathizers. Covert CIA agents who opposed the War were outed. U.S. attorney who didn't want to play politics with our Justice system were fired. If you weren't with Mr. Rove, you were against him. When Jean Schmidt went on the House floor and called Jack Murtha a coward, she was expressing the top-down Karl Rove modus operandi: divisive name-calling instead of rational discourse.
Whether it was misleading the American public into the Iraq War or trying to gut one of the most popular and beneficial government programs- Social Security, Mr. Rove's policy vision recklessly disregarded the quality of human life and the health of our economy. Hundreds of billions of dollars have been spent on Mr. Rove's endless quagmire in Iraq. It is no wonder that thousands of principled conservatives voted for me in 2006- Mr. Rove has demonstrated that Democrats understand fiscal restraint.
Karl Rove epitomized what remains wrong with the Republican Party- a greater concern with power than serving the American people. In Congress, I will fight for policies that serve the people: affordable quality health-care for all Americans, energy independence, job creation, ensuring the strength and competitiveness of our economy, bringing our troops home from Iraq, affordable higher education, improving our schools, and protecting the environment.
In 2006, the American public rejected Karl Rove and the Republicans by giving control of the Congress to the Democrats. But his toxic legacy lives on in representatives like Jean Schmidt, a divider who advocates for the powerful and not the people. We need to put an end to that legacy, and we can do it right here in the 2nd district. Thank you for taking the time to read my thoughts.
