I received a mailing from a candidate for State Senator in Illinois, Matt Murphy. The solicitation I received came with a pamphlet that on the front page says, "HELP STOP Unwanted Telephone and Mail Solicitations." The pamphlet starts with a Q&A with such questions as, "How can I end unwanted telemarketing calls?" The solution according to the propaganda is to sign up with the "Mail Preference Service," which is described as "another consumer service sponsored by The Direct Marketing Association." Well, who is this Direct Marketing Assocication and how are they trying to take the next election? That and more below the fold.
I wonder if this might be the plan of attack for some Republicans in what appears to be a bleak upcoming election (for them). This sounds alot like a diary I read in the last few days here about some robo-calling that was done by the Republican party, although that wasn't identified until the end of the call, and if the callee hung up, he was called again repeatedly. (I tried to find the link, but couldn't find it in my seaches, so help me out if you can in the comments).
One tip-off that something is wrong is that the URL they provide in order to "register online" to be removed from the mailing list doesn't work. The URL is http://www.the-dma.org/....
My guess is that this is setting us up for another round of robo calls masquerading as calls from the democrats when they are actually calls from the Republicans. I wanted my theory to be on record so that I can both warn my neighbors of potential shenanigans, and so that I can proclaim, "I told you so," when it actually happens.
