Instead of opening this diary by committing a few crimes against DKos (more on this later), I'll just go over a column that was just published earlier today. Lets start with the opening line:
In the administration of George W. Bush, the Republican Party has achieved the greatest combination of idiocy and evil in human history.
Strong words, to say the least. Let's see what this author is up to... if you dare jump over the fold.
The author then goes over all the trouble that the US administration has gotten this country into with the illegal invasion of Iraq. In a few short paragraphs, reminds the readers of the millions of dead or displaced Iraqis, the increasingly shaky political ground on which many important US puppet rulers stand on in the Middle East, the scary situation of the US Military Forces as it may see it's only escape route towards Kuwait cut off when the time for a retreat finally comes, etc.
Here's a few samples:
In the postwar years, the US managed with its money and influence to secularize an elite class in Middle Eastern countries, an elite that identifies with the West and not with their own cultures. This artificial elite has produced a wide political gap between the masses of the people and the rulers. Increasingly, Muslim masses perceive their rulers as allied with foreign powers against them.
Just as Hitler long denied German defeats on the Russian front and even in his last days was ordering non-existent German divisions to relieve Berlin, the Bush regime finds a new straw to grasp in Iraq each time the previous straw proves to be a delusion. The latest straw is "the surge."
Many of the administration’s most evil members—Wolfowitz, Feith, Libby, Rumsfeld, Rove, and Gonzales—have been discarded as the tragedy deepens, but Cheney remains ensconced as does the moron in the White House. Before they fall, Bush and Cheney will bring more sorrow to the world and more shame to Americans.
Now back to the crime business. As I mentioned at the beginning, I was about to commit a few crimes against DKos. The first of those possible crimes is the somewhat radical antiwar stance that I'm reporting. I know that many Kossacks are more interested in getting their favourite top-tier Democratic candidate elected and bashing Republicans with much-rehashed arguments than they are in stopping the invasion of Iraq. I'm assuming here that those have stopped reading by now.
Now for crime no. 2: This column was written by Paul Craig Roberts, the ex-Reaganite -- he is, for all practical purposes, Dr. Reaganomics. I get the impression that quoting someone like this is a "no-no" on Dkos (I'm not that serious here).
And finally, there's crime no. 3: At the time of this writing, the column is only available on vdare.com, an anti-immigration website that's probably read regularly by ... the anti-immigrants (to use a polite terminology). Here's the link for those who dare. To make matters worse, he's also syndicated at Creators Syndicate, home of quite a few wing nuts from Fox News and elsewhere.
Yet I like Roberts. He doesn't beat around the Bush and he gets to his points real fast. He's one of those paleo-conservatives that, more often than not, makes a lot of sense. Of course, this does not mean that I agree with all his positions, far from it; only that I respect his approach and I try to understand how he got there. It should be noted that most of the Vdare readers want him out of the website and that even though he used to be published on Townhall.com, he got kicked out a few years ago. In a recent article, he dared to write that he would gladly accept the whole population of Mexico in exchange for getting rid of the neo-cons currently sitting in the White House. He's also published more or less regularly at counterpunch.com and he contributes to antiwar.org (I'm assuming that this column will appear on the latter pretty soon).
Then again, I read Townhall.com, although that's mostly for a laugh. And for the occasional nugget column that will push a progressive agenda under the disguise of a right wing argument. What better way to know your enemy?
End of this diary, written after yet another sleepless night. Let's hope it doesn't sound as f***ed up as I probably look ;-)
