OK, so by now I assume most everyone here has seen:
http://www.sorryeverybody.com
And yes, I'm aware there's been some diaries on it. And you're probably already aware of the conservative counter:
http://www.werenotsorry.com
But I have to say - I'm completely fascinated by the glaring differences of the two sites. Not to mention that this is the first true memewar I've ever seen. Memes, the little bits of ideas that the internet floats out, are usually fairly sneaky units. Here - it's an all out battle royale of expression.
First, the differences.
For on thing, werenotsorry.com is miniscule compared to sorryeverybody.com. Perhaps this will change, but I doubt it - because of another glaring difference I'll mention in a bit. At the time of this writing, though, sorryeverybody is working on page 326 while werenotsorry is branching into 13.
Why I think sorryeverybody will keep the lead? Because it's far more likely to hear from other countries sharing in the sentiment, while werenotsorry can't resist fluffing their website with a seperate page of photoshopped parodies.
Also take into account what people write. Sorreverybody is full of lengthy descriptions of feeling and emotion, while the tone of werenotsorry is short and well, pretty shallow.
Naturally the rabid right will take this as bleeding heart weak-kneed liberalism. I mean, what do we have to apologize for? We have a President who never did anything wrong! Just ask him!
Meanwhile, the rest of us will be doing our best to make sure that the whole world doesn't just go on hating us.
And therein lies the similarity - both sites are are going to be out to prove that they're the majority opinion of the US. Let the battle begin?
