Two years ago, the vast majority of the population had no idea that dairies regularly gave their cows artificial female hormones to increase their milk production. Over the weekend, Kroger announced that it would no longer sell milk from these cows.
Don't ever tell me we can't make a difference. It's obvious that we can. The key seems to be to hit them at what is the most important...their pocket book.
Kroger is responding to a serious drop in demand for their milk and an marked increase in milk sales for organic milk from cows who are not given the hormones. In other words, it hit them where it hurt the most -- their pocketbook.
This is not the first time, consumer demand has dictated changes. Boycotts of products and stores have effectively produced an environment more amicable to flexibility and changes. Corporations are responding to the demand for new and healthy, eco-friendly products. Yes we can make changes. We should just learn that demonstrations, voting, words, don't change anything. What motivates our country to make changes is money, plain and simple.
Our current energy crises is just another example. WE could have made changes in the 60's. We could have made these changes in the 70's. We could have at any point demanded changes. We didn't. Now that the price of oil has significantly increased the price of gas, it is having a major impact on our budgets and we are feeling the pain. Yes money effects changes to our lifestyle as well.
So the lesson to be learned is that we can effectually make changes. We just need to motivate and justify these changes through the one thing that inspires both individuals and corporations to action......MONEY! And if the MONEY is significant enough, changes can come quickly.
Just remember, the love of money is the root of all evil! I wonder if our country can survive if and when money becomes more important that freedom.
