Godless Homosexual Abortionists are not the face of the Democratic Party
The Democratic Party has always been a big tent of diverse people and causes. Like America itself, which has been described more like a salad bowl than a mixing bowl, the strength of the Democratic Party is diversity. There are some deeply committed to legalizing gay marriage. Some are passionate about protecting abortion rights and doctor patient privacy. Atheists, agnostics, ex-Catholics and self proclaimed enlightened intellectuals all find refuge within the Democratic Party. But none of these groups define the Party and none of these issues should be planks in the Democratic platform. Homosexuality, abortion and atheism are highly controversial issues without consensus, agreement, or unity within the Democratic Party. Promoting pro-gay, pro-abortion and anti-God agendas are offensive, and detrimental to Democratic electoral victory. While tolerated, many of these positions are offensive to the historical base of the Democratic Party.
Have I got your attention yet?
Historically, Democrats are the party of morality. Fights for social and economic justice came directly out of Christian beliefs in the dignity of life. But it was during the 1960’s Peace and Civil Rights movements that Republicans were able to paint Democrats as lawbreakers guilty of civil disobedience. They started by calling Dr. Martin Luther King a Communist. Reminding people that since Communist Government leaders were atheists, then the Civil Rights movement had to be a Godless attempt at destroying the very nature of human order. This was ridiculous then, but it’s no more ridiculous than today’s Republicans trying to paint the Democratic Party as an organization made up of Godless, homosexual baby killers. The sad part is that some in our party want to give them more ammunition.
Let’s look at the historical base of the Democratic Party: blacks, urban immigrants, the rural South, Catholics, Latinos, union workers and women. While the Democratic Party has changed, becoming more inclusive and tolerant over the past several years these same groups are deeply steeped in religious traditions. It is simply counterproductive to ignore the fact that most Democrats are a people of faith.
Can we win a Presidential election without the black preachers and predominately black churches so instrumental in the civil rights struggle? How are the great Baptist churches so influential in the battle for civil rights to take the rabid atheistic diaries that continue to populate Daily Kos? Find me black ministers who approve of Gay Marriage or even unrestricted abortion.
Can we win a Presidential election without Catholic immigrants from Latin America and Europe? How are Catholics who consider the Pope as infallible and disobedience to their Priest detrimental to eternal salvation supposed to vote on a pro-abortion position? In the machismo society of Mexican immigrants, do you believe a Homosexual agenda is a popular political position? Do you really expect Democrats can win an election without the support of Catholics? Why would you even allow an anti-God message, to be officially sanctioned by the Democratic Party?
Will an atheistic platform or Gay Marriage position win converts in an hourly wage union shop? Do you really think that the Teamsters, AFL-CIO or UAW will support a Democratic Party is anti religion and dedicated to Gay marriage. Can Democrats win a National election without the support of organized labor?
The South is still the home of "Yellow Dog Democrats," folks that would rather vote for a yellow dog than anyone other than a Democrat. How well does the atheist message play in the South? How many openly gay politicians get elected in the South? While the rural West and South may oppose government involvement in personal lives, how well does "unrestricted abortions" play? Can the Democrats win an election without the rural voter?
Democrats are identified by issues like social justice, economic justice, National defense, the dignity of life, universal education and health care. Are these not enough?
The 2004, and 2008 National elections were decided by razor thin margins. Does anyone think the Democrats can win with an anti-God platform? Why would we push an agenda that much of the traditional base views as immoral?
During the last two elections Republicans tried to paint the Democratic Party as Godless homosexual abortionists. They know full well that this is a recipe for defeat.
If we want to want to win elections, we will not alienate our base.
