When I first read this blog, I was overwhelmed by trying to determine the most outrageous part of Mitch McConnell’s behavior today at the U.S. Chamber of Commerce meeting. McConnell was the guest speaker. After announcing that the meeting would be public, the U.S. Chamber staff kicked reporters out during the question and answer portion of the session saying that the event was actually closed door. Whatever, that’s classic McConnell and really isn’t that surprising and is tangential to the real story here.
When you read the synopsis of his speech, you will notice that Mitch McConnell doesn’t think that finding a solution to the war in Iraq should be a very high priority for Congress. McConnell accused Democrats of focusing on the war in Iraq too much and said that Democrats should be working on the things that are important to the country like social security.
That’s right, read that again: Mitch McConnell thinks that dismantling and privatizing social security should be a higher priority than finding a solution to the war in Iraq.
From the Reuters Blog
Democrats controlling Congress of suffering from a twin obsession: the Iraq war and conducting investigations, instead of getting down to the real work of Congress....
He’s "deeply disappointed" the new Democratic-controlled Congress has not tackled the "tough issues," like Social Security.....
Besides their "preoccupation" with the Iraq war, Democrats spend their time dreaming of "taxation, regulation and litigation. It’s in their DNA."
This really speaks to McConnell’s character and should signal to his constituents what McConnell thinks his actual job consists in the U.S. Senate really is – to protect and promote the interests of corporate America before defending the brave men and women who serve in our country’s military.
If Mitch McConnell actually said what Rueters blog is reporting, he should immediately issue a public apology to Kentucky’s brave men and women who are serving in Iraq and their families. Suggesting that our men and women in uniform are anything but a top priority is shameful and says a great deal about Mitch McConnell’s character.
