Illinois Rep. Jerry Weller, a republican from Morris, officialy announced today that he will not run for re-election in 2008.
More below the fold...
First elected in 1994, Weller has been facing some very negative press in recent weeks that questioned his reporting of land transactions in Nicaragua and his role, if any, in his wife's charitable group.
Besides the barrage of questions about his land dealings, Weller is also fighting a subpoena to testify in former California congressman "Duke" Cunningham's bribery trial and, just this week, was named to a list of the most corrupt congressman by Citizens for Responsibility and Ethics in Washington.
The offical reason given was, as always, so he could spend more time with his wife, Zury Rios-Montt de Weller and their one-year-old daughter, who live in Guatemala.
No word if his wife, a member of the Guatemalan legislature who is currently running for re-election, will be ending her re-election bid so they can spend more time together as a family...
