Please, I beg you, follow this link and be amazed: http://tpmmuckraker.talkingpointsmem... I'm not gonna knock my fellow Kos denizens regarding their diaries, for that would be bad form to the millionth degree, but I tell you, the Obama/Clinton soap opera is a dinner-theater spectacle compared to what's going on with Congress and AG Mukasey.
Mukasey has just stated - unequivocally, without reservation - that anything the Justice Department okays as legal is legal, real laws be damned. Or: we are effectively a banana republic as of today, 2/7/08.
So it's official, now. We move from a country ruled by laws and not men to a country ruled by the whims of men playing happycake with laws. As in Animal Farm and 1984, where the elasticity (to say the least) of laws and precepts and tenets was the order of the day/hour/minute, so too now in America, an actual non-novelized country that...well...presumably truly does exist. But I'm not sure what does and doesn't exist anymore, tell you the truth. And I can tell you that no one around me, literally no one surrounding me at this moment (or, my coworkers), gives a rat's ass about it. (Sure, they don't know about it, but I learned a long time ago that I can relate something I've learned that they don't know, from torture to suspension of habeas corpus to Jose Padilla's extrajudicial imprisonment, and I'll get yawns and uninformed [gasp; wretch; vomit] agreement/shoulder-shrugs in response to whatever I'm relating. I hate to say it, but fuck 'em, and hard.)
Yes, you guessed it, friends: the Nuremberg trials, which we thought were a template for rather hard-core indictment of this kind of behavior, are no longer a precedent. They are laughed it, mocked right out there in the open, by the new Snowballs and O'Briens. The Justice Department can now sign off on the CIA's crucifixion of a suspect - hell, the CIA could go Roman and line roads with crucified suspects, blood seeping from the backs of the nails and dripping on our shoes - and guess what? It's all good, because the Justice Department - er, Ministry for Torture - is infallible. They are beyond reproach or merest possibility to do wrong.
We have to press to our breasts the beyond-ugly truth that our Senate and House are hopelessly to-the-marrow corrupted and irredeemable. They no longer serve us; they serve their masters. Period. So to hell with calling and trying to make a difference. In the middle of election season and Obamafever and Hillaryland's hall of mirrors, a man is sitting at a desk in Washington DC and saying, in measured, non-Gonzales tones the following:
"Anything goes, now, for those whose palms hold the reins of power. And I am only too happy and proud to enable and approve anything, everything, no matter how despicable, in its rawest form, slipping from my masters' lips."
Thanks, Chuck and Diane. Thanks, you fucks.
