Absolutely the most disgusting thing I've heard. I've now officially decided if this is the position of Hillary herself, she's lost my vote in the general. I will not vote for someone who doesn't respect the will of the people.
But Clinton will not concede the race to Obama if he wins a greater number of pledged delegates by the end of the primary season, and will count on the 796 elected officials and party bigwigs to put her over the top, if necessary, said Clinton's communications director, Howard Wolfson.
"I want to be clear about the fact that neither campaign is in a position to win this nomination without the support of the votes of the superdelegates,'' Wolfson told reporters in a conference call.
"We don't make distinctions between delegates chosen by million of voters in a primary and those chosen between tens of thousands in caucuses,'' Wolfson said. "And we don't make distinctions when it comes to elected officials'' who vote as superdelegates at the convention.
"We are interested in acquiring delegates, period,'' he added.
So instead of party unity Ms. Clinton, you will choose to drag this out as far as you can? Is this the way to treat the party that for so long supported your family, even though some of us KNEW your husband was wrong?
I am disgusted, almost to the point of anger. It sounds like an honest to god attempt on your part that even though you may trail Mr. Obama, you are going to attempt to subvert the will of the people and use the establishment to put you where your campaign thinks you rightfully belong.
The primaries were created because these backroom deals were bad for the party, and now you want to take us back to it.
Mr. Obama, i plead for you to bring this up. America deserves to know what she plans to do because she can't bow out if she comes up short for the sake of party unity.
And to the rest of you.. here lies the dream ticket. R.I.P.
UNBELIEVABLE.
UPDATE: To the person who said he's sick of the candidate diaries. Um, this isn't just your typical candidate diary.. this includes a statement from the campaign. This is DEFINITELY something we as democrats need to be discussing RIGHT NOW.
I am about to write to Howard Dean about this.. and plead with him to allow NEITHER campaign to pull something like this. We NEED to win this November, the threats and damage from a McCain presidency are too great.
UPDATE 2: Chris Bowers at OpenLeft has a good summary on what he can glean from our superdelegate rules
DNC rules do not obligate super delegates to thwart the popular will of Democratic primary voters and caucus goers. Just as DNC rules allow for super delegates to thwart the popular will of Democratic primary voters and caucus goers, those same rules allow for super delegates to ratify the popular will of Democratic primary voters and caucus goers. Both are well within the rules. The decision is up to the super delegates.
The difference is that if super delegates decide to ratify the popular will of Democratic primary voters and caucus goers, then super delegates are upholding both the rules of the DNC and the principle of democracy. In other words, voting to thwart the popular will upholds our rules, but not our values, while voting to ratify the popular will upholds both our rules and our values.
