It wasn't always this way. Even though you didn't always vocally support progress, and sometimes voted in ways that frustrated us. We believed you ultimately had the best interests of the country and progressive causes at heart. Unfortunately with every week that this primary season drags on, it becomes clearer that this is more about one person's ambition than a struggle to determine what is best for our party and our country.
Your attacks on Barack Obama as soft on national security are the worst and most damaging kind of political maneuvering. The implication that one cannot be both wise and strong hurts Democrats and progressives everywhere. Republicans have been pushing this idea that you must simply be agressive and muscular without thought since 2002. It has been very effective for them, but we are just starting to make headway against this dangerous and foolish notion. Attacking the only major candidate from either party who has demonstrated good national security policy judgement over the last 6 years, however, is the opposite of progress.
At this point it is clear that there is almost no way for you to win the nomination. And there is certainly no way you can win it without fracturing the party in a way that is not only fatal to our chances to take back the White House, but potentially to hundreds of other downticket races. We will not advocate you to our friends and family. We will not volunteer to phone-bank and canvas across the 50 states of this union for you. We will not give you our money.
Please reach deep down inside yourself. Find that Hillary Rodham of the 60's and 70's, the one that would be over-joyed to support Obama. Step down with grace and humility. Pledge to do everything you can to make Barack Obama our president, and then fight to bring about the progressive agenda we almost unanimously agree on.
Update: There seems to be some confusion about the intent of this diary. This is NOT a "if Clinton wins diary." Clinton isn't going to win the nomination. The point is, every day Clinton stays in this contest causes additional damage to progressive causes. Pointing out that we won't support her in the imaginary world where she did win the nomination helps to illustrate that point, but should not overshadow it.
