As much fun as it is to attack Democrats, it's even more fun (and far more important) to attack Republicans.
Now that McCain has won the Republican nomination, it's time we start looking through his vote history to see just how much he sucks.
I may go through the full voting record [Gelman library has the Congressional Quarterly annual reports with all the votes from 1983-1989 (online roll call history starts in 1990; co-sponsorships are available for McCain's entire career)] at some point.
Right now I'm just going to highlight some votes available from the odious American Conservative Union.
Note: Title updated because sensationalism sells.
Anti-Martin Luther King Holiday
Following his state's racist governor [Edwin Mechem] and his anti-civil rights Senate mentor Barry Goldwater, McCain voted against making Martin Luther King Jr.'s birthday a federal holiday. Only 89 members of the House of Representatives joined him.
He claims to regret this vote, but given that he cast it, I think he needs to make it clear that he feels Martin Luther King Jr. is more honorable than, for instance, John Hagee.
Support for African Terrorists in the 1980's
From the New York Times archives
They capture peasants and cut off their ears. They burn clinics.
They attack medical teams going to inoculate children.
Those are some of the tactics used by the Mozambican guerrilla group Renamo. Set up originally by white Rhodesia, then supported by South Africa, Renamo was designed to destabilize Mozambique. Its strategy is simple terror.
The viciousness of Renamo has aroused widespread support for the Marxist Government of Mozambique, regardless of ideology. Margaret Thatcher has just agreed to double British aid to $25 million a year; Britain trains Mozambican Army officers and is about to enlarge that program. Even the conservative Government of neighboring Malawi now has soldiers helping the fight against Renamo.
John McCain was one of the 28 Senators opposing Ronald Reagan, who also wanted to aid the Mozambique government, and supporting the terrorists.
That's right. He broke with Ronald Reagan to support the white supremacist-enabled terrorists.
This support led him to oppose President Reagan's fully qualified nominee for Ambassador to Mozambique, Melissa Wells.
(I will look for more on this later)
Opposed the Civil Rights Act of 1990
Does McCain regret these two votes as well?
Someone needs to ask this question.
