I have been a member of this board for some time and rarely post diaries, so I apologize in advance if I'm breaking any rules.
I am saddened that the tone of the campaign is now starting to threaten an opportunity to dramatically change the direction of the country. I think us writing each other and trashing each other's candidate is counterproductive, but I believe the super delegates have the power to end these recent tactics by the Clinton camp. So I urge everyone to write their super delegates today. My letter is below:
Dear Congresswoman Tauscher
This record turnout at the primary elections this year have shown that democrats are very interested in this race and all indications show an opportunity for a tremendous victory in November. This includes not only taking the presidency, but winning many seats in the House and Senate. Democrats stand to gain in state legislatures as well, especially in states that typically vote Republican, so called "Red States".
Up until recently, the campaign between Senators Obama and Clinton has been mostly positive, where the debates have focused on their minor differences on the issues, and they have had a public forum to attack the policies of President Bush and Senator McCain. I felt we were blessed to have two strong candidates delivering this message against the Republicans and in fact our family split our votes in the California Primary.
However, Senator Clinton has now dramatically changed the tone of the campaign. Although I feel it’s fair for her to point out that she has more experience than Senator Obama, she has made statements that sound like an endorsement of John McCain. Her associates have compared Senator Obama to Ken Starr. She has used a photograph of Senator Obama in her campaign material that has been deliberately darkened and widened which has offended many in the African-American community. There are other examples that I am sure you are aware of. I fear these tactics will cause a rift in the party and we will lose this rare opportunity to dramatically change the direction of this country in these very challenging times.
As a superdelegate, I urge you to contact Senator Clinton and have her stop these divisive tactics. If you don’t think it is important, please come to Acalanes High School where we are trying to figure out which teachers should be laid off and which programs should be cut. On your way, count the number of homes which have a foreclosure sale sign. Finally, stop by the Lafayette BART station and look in silence at the nearly 4000 crosses on the hill.
This election cannot be about one person, but how can we change the direction of our country.
Thank you.
