My parents, who are baby boomers in their fifties, raised me to be color blind. They truly raised me to view all equally. I even have a vague memory in Montessori School (pre nursery) of being reprimanded when I pointed out that a classmate was strange because she was black.
But that rearing took hold, as when I was around 12 years old, and my family was visiting my Granddad and Nana in Florida, I was astonished and shocked when I heard my grandfather say he wouldn't go to a Orlando Magic game because he didn't want to see monkeys run up and down the court. Now, my grandfather was a good man (he has since passed), but, as with many of his generation, he was a racist. I am sure many of you have similar experiences with your elders. Indeed, my view of eliminating the prevalence of racism in our country is that we truly have to wait for generations to come and go, and over the years, racism will eventually die off with those generations. And it will take good people like my parents and yours to reverse the tide of racism, by instilling in their children the notion that all are equal, and that race matters not in determining the quality of a person's character.
This election has been an eye opener for me. One of the reasons I am a Democrat is because I am color blind, and I thought my Party was also. At the very least, my Party championed color blindness, and equality of opportunity. My Party championed civil rights.
I still believe my Democratic Party is color blind.
I cannot say the same for some of my fellow Democrats.
Geraldine Ferraro for example.
To suggest that one's race is the ONLY reason for a person's success is racist. In saying that, you are necessarily just looking at the color of one's skin, rather than the content of one's character. And that is by definition racism.
And therefore, if Mrs. Clinton does not immediately fire and then publically denounce Geraldine Ferraro, it must necessarily be true that Hillary Clinton at the very least encourages and endorses the comments of Geraldine Ferraro, which are racist.
Thus, Hillary, at that point, would have to be labeled a racist.
Fire her Hillary.
You must, or I must consider you part of the problem of racism.
