Perhaps you may have heard about the short film "Fitna" by a Dutch politician Geert Wilders, that is about the Koran among other things.
Many have called it racist among other things and tried to suppress it, including the company Network Solutions which shut down the website it was to be released on even before it was released.
Well, the movie has finally been released. Read on!
This has turned into a classic case of free speech. Fitna, according to Geert Wilders, is about how the Koran is a "fascist book" that "incites murder."
Wilders has been under heavy police protection since another prominent Dutch filmmaker (Theo Van Gogh) who made a film critical of the role of women in Islam was killed by a radical Islamist.
Since Wilders couldn't get his website back to release the movie, he finally released it on his party website, which is, at this writing, snowed under.
Here is the torrent, too.
The movie has hit liveleak and will probably show up, temporarily at least, on Youtube soon. Here is the link to it on Liveleak: http://www.liveleak.com/...
So what about this highly controversial film? Should it be shown? I personally think yes, it should. To suppress it because of fears of riots by offended Islamists just shows that they have more rights than those who want to see it. I'm sure many will be offended by the content of the movie, but to ban it seems to be quite contrary to freedom of speech.
In any case, it's out of the bag: It's not been out for more than two hours and there's already over a million views for the Dutch version and half a million for the English version on Liveleak. The torrent numbers are skyrocketing too.
Yes, it is anti-Islam. And yes, many Islamists will likely riot over this movie, though in so doing they will likely prove Wilders point--Islam cannot take criticism. I don't recall too many riots over artists who dipped the Crucifix in dung. Wilders has released this on Thursday, the day before all the Imams and such address their followers in Friday services. That's a deliberate throwing down of the gauntlet.
There are lots of moderate followers of Islam. It's time for them to step up and show that people who disagree with the religion (and innocent bystanders) aren't going to be killed for their disagreement. Or will there be a repeat of the Denmark cartoons riots?
