I was wondering how long it was going to take for Hillary to screw up Bitter-Gate. I figured it would take a couple of days... and here we go.
This YouTube shows Hillary throwing around the word "America" and "American" like a real Republican, but the more interesting bit is where she claims she's from a "working class family."
Blogger HardPolitik makes the point that this is laughable. As a quick glance at her Wikipedia entry shows,
Her father, Hugh Ellsworth Rodham ... operated a small but successful business in the textile industry. Her mother, Dorothy Emma Howell ... was a homemaker.
In other words, Hillary comes from owning class. She grew up in Park Ridge, IL and her parents drove Cadillacs. Her father owned a manufacturing company. She went to Wellesley, where she was a Young Republican.
Is this the only time she's claimed to be "working class," or is this another Tuzla?
(What's mildly surprising about "Bitter-gate" aside from the sheer fatuousness of it is how the Clintons and the media have latched onto the wrong talking point. You have to be a real elitist not to know that many people in Pennsylvania are bitter. To say that "people are rolling up their sleeves and getting to work," you have to never have experienced unemployment. Yep, a lot of people would love to get to work -- but they can't find it. There are other points Obama made in his statement that could be considered far more condescending; but I'm not interested in talking about that.)
But getting back to "working class": is this a single offhand lie "gaffe", or is this another Clinton false autobiographical talking point that needs to be brought to light. Is she going around Pennsylvania claiming to be "working class"? Can we hammer HRC on this one too?
