On opposing the anti-China hysteria by western MSM, the population of China and Taiwan are displaying remarkable agreement. Taiwan is a democracy, has no media censorship, and its government has not taken a stand on the Tibet issue. However, this has not stopped Taiwan people from being sympathetic to Chinese, and being supportive of Beijing Olympic.
Over the weekend, Chinese Americans across many cities organized protests against CNN. The MSM has a nearly complete blackout on this event. The only English reports I can find are from the two major California newspapers, the LA Times article, and the SFGate report. Even in those reports, they tried to minimize the scale of the protest. This (that they tried to minimize) is not obvious if you just read the articles. But you can compare these reports to the reports of the same event in Taiwan, a free country by all western standards.
The report by Central Daily News in Taipei, begins with this sentence
On 19th the streets of Los Angeles erupted the largest Chinese American protests in more than ten years.
And the description of the crowd,
The sidewalks of the Sunset Boulevard near the CNN building were packed with the crowd of protesters. The crowd spanned three blocks, over several hundred meters. The crowd is estimated at several thousand.
Taiwan's United Daily News shows a more interesting picture. The picture shows the protesters holding Chinese national flags and Taiwanese national flags side by side. The caption reads
In a sea of five-star red flags, there is also help from Republic of China's blue-sky-white-sun red flags, showing the unity between Chinese Americans originating from both sides of the Taiwan strait against the anti-China incident.
Notice in the picture, the woman in the front holding the Taiwanese flag is wearing a t-shirt that says "CNN, Liar; Cafferty, Fire."
I have heard arguments that Chinese from mainland are controlled by their censored media, by communist agents, and by their blind nationalism. I have been accused of being a communist apologist, of a communist plant, and worse. Now please tell me why on earth that people from Taiwan would be willing to defend the Chinese government? The answer is no, they are not defending the Chinese government. I am not defending the Chinese government. Chinese, Taiwanese, and Chinese Americans are all saying the same thing, that the anti-China hysteria is wrong. It is a hysteria whipped up by the distorted reports from the western media. It does not help democracy in China, freedom of Tibet, or peaceful relationship between China and US.
And the media blackout on these protests is shameful.
