I'm not sure how to write this diary. I almost posted it as "Assassinations: Clinton's New Metric." I would have talked about how in this metric, she's tied with Obama. But it's too snarky, and I'm too upset.
I just want to say this: even if Obama is assassinated, you will not be the nominee. You will never be the nominee. The stars aligned for you during this election cycle. You had huge name recognition, polled better than anyone else by far, had a huge money advantage, had early support from tons of superdelegates, etc. But now you are exposed. As some have said, it should have been a surprise that you were unable to lock up even more superdelegates early, and that that should have been seen as a crack in the foundation of your campaign. It wasn't, but hindsight has revealed it.
You were unable to lock up more superdelegates early for the same reason that you are unable to get more pledged delegates now. The Democratic Party does not want you. There are some in the party that do, true, but not a majority. You will never get a majority of the people in the Democratic Party to support you in a primary.
I know you're hoping that something will happen to Obama which will end our little infatuation with him. First it was scandal, but I think you finally got it through your head that he doesn't have one (yeah, Wright doesn't count). Now, assassination. I shudder to think about it. Let me be the one to tell you this, you just removed one of your literally bloody paths to the nomination. Should Obama be assassinated, his supporters will probably rally around Edwards should it happen prior to his naming of a VP. If it occurs after, we will rally around his VP. Not you. And by not you, I mean both because you will not be his VP, and because people will choose his VP over the vulture that is you.

On another note, you chose some poor examples yesterday. Your husband. Bobby Kennedy. Your husband won before June. He was calling himself the presumptive nominee when he was in a worse position than Obama is currently in. Bobby Kennedy. Bobby Kennedy. Bobby Kennedy got into the race after it started - against a sitting president of his own party, during a war. Then LBJ dropped out of the race. Maybe those things had something to do with why the primary season was taking so long.
Just so you know, there is a corollary to 1968. You are like LBJ in this. In this campaign, you have even diminished MLK to heap praise upon LBJ, sketching the parallels, yourself. Obama is the champion of the people that is challenging your political power structure. He is our Bobby Kennedy. And you reference RFK's assassination as a not-so-veiled reason why the race shouldn't be viewed as over. Do you have any idea what you reference? We lost so much that could have been possible through a RFK presidency. Instead, just as a glimpse, the assassination of Bobby Kennedy gave us Nixon in '68, who in turn spawned Cheney, Rumsfeld, and that whole band of assholes who have been fucking this country ever since. We lost 40 years.
You do have a role in this. Do what LBJ did in the face of Bobby Kennedy's primary challenge. Remove yourself from the race. It is time.
