I begin this diary with a photo of a "handsome man".
Oops, not that one, yikes!
This is the one.
That first one is my congressman, Dana Rohrabacher. The second is Democratic Presidential Nominee Barack Obama, whom Rohrabacher just called handsome man (don't even get me started on "articulate").
I'm not going to dispute Obama's looks. But it's kind of freaky hearing this talk from my representative. Especially when a google search shows that this seems to happen repeatedly.
Dana finds the Iraq generals handsome. His stint as a screenwriter included a tale about men doing manly things with each other in Mexico. Sheesh, it's like hearing Chris Matthews gush about Bush. Or Harold Ford, Jr..
WTF?! This week alone our congress is dealing with serious issues like torture at Guantanamo and global climate change. And Dana uses his time to talk about the handsomeness of Obama and panties on the head.
At least Dana's giving equal time to the women. He dismissively notes that his challenger, Huntington Beach Mayor Debbie Cook is physically attractive. OK, she is:
But try to tell me the 80% of voters in Tuesday's Democratic primary who selected her were doing it based on her looks. Maybe he doesn't want to recognize that people find many other attractive things in this candidate:
- Her support of the Responsible Plan to end the war in Iraq
- Her steadfast fight to protect the environment
- Her expertise in the area of energy and peak oil
- Her record of leadership and working with others in 8 years on city council
In fact, maybe Dana meant to say she was
fiscally attractive, since Debbie's been one of the most fiscally conservative councilmembers in our city.
Today's LA Times has a great overview of the candidate and race. Go check it out to learn more about why we need to send this woman to Washington in November.
Rohrabacher's been in Congress 20 years now. You think he'd have better things to do than evaluate how our candidates look. I'm excited to be supporting both Barack Obama for President and my mayor, Debbie Cook for Congress. And it's not because they're good-looking, Dana.
