I have a question as to how I can best perform my own personal act of Democratic reconciliation and it has to do with contribution strategy and the prospective direction of the Obama campaign. I had intended to sit on my check-writing hands for the primary season but ultimately ended up giving a reasonably significant amount to the Clinton campaign simply because I did not like seeing her contest primaries while being outspent as massively as she was. I am in the fortunate position of being able to max out a contribution to Obama for both the pre-convention and general election seasons but do not have unlimited funds such that if I did so I would be sending less to the DNC, the DCCC, the DSCC and individual campaigns. Now my quandry.
Do any DailyKos readers have a sense of whether the Obama campaign is going to accept or reject Federal funding for the general election campaign? I admit to having a schizophrenic perspective on this question because while I wish all campaigns were publicly funded, this is probably the year when the Democrats would actually have a fundraising advantage in a general and I am loathe to give up any advantage in beating McCain. It does, however, impact my giving strategy. If Obama is not going to take federal money for the general then I will max out in the pre-convention season in support of what I anticipate to be an impending surge of general election advertising. I will, however, cut back on my other candidate and party support because I would also want to max out for the general election. If Obama was going to take the federal funding, however, I would feel free to start giving to some other candidates and the party campaign organizations.
