Serving the Amercian people should supercede getting re-elected.
Does this look familiar? This is the oath that each and every Senator and Representative takes upon entering office:
I do solemnly swear (or affirm) that I will support and defend the Constitution of the United States against all enemies, foreign and domestic; that I will bear true faith and allegiance to the same; that I take this obligation freely, without any mental reservation or purpose of evasion; and that I will well and faithfully discharge the duties of the office on which I am about to enter: So help me God.
I have a fairly simple question: Are our members of Congress upholding this oath? My personal opinion is no; it would be interesting to determine if our representatives believe that they are. It seems that in the name of political expedience (re-election) they are quietly biding their time until the traitor-in-chief leaves office. They remember the backlash against some in Congress after the Clinton impeachment, and don’t want to suffer the same consequences.
That does not absolve them for ignoring what seem to be blatant crimes of the Bush Administration. Unfortunately, most members of Congress actually believe that the American people would prefer to ignore these crimes, and grant these individuals effective immunity. I believe that, if not put in political terms, most Americans would prefer that elected officials be held to at least as high of a standard as ordinary citizens. That means, quite simply, hearings, trials if warranted, and convictions if guilty. Anything less is unacceptable.
If John F. Kennedy wrote his book "Profiles in Courage" on the Congress of the last 30 years, he probably wouldn’t get past chapter 1. Please forward this oath to your Senators and Representative. I will.
