A transplanted Midwesterner puts down roots in Alabama and helps show how "loyal Bushies" have corrupted our justice system.
It wasn't enough for an Alabama university to fire an employee, apparently for writing critically about the Bush Justice Department on his personal blog.
Now the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB)is trashing Roger Shuler's reputation, too.
Shuler writes the blog Legal Schnauzer, which deals extensively with the prosecution of former Alabama Governor Don Siegelman. A number of citizens contacted UAB officials to voice their concerns over the apparent political overtones surrounding Shuler's termination.
Apparently feeling some heat, UAB President issued a response to several concerned citizens, through her Public Relations Director Gary Mans. For good measure, Mans also posted the response as a comment to a story about Shuler's firing at the Chronicle of Higher Education Web site:
UAB's Spin Machine Lurches Into Action
The statement said Shuler's dismissal was based entirely on his work performance.
This, however, contradicts the findings of UAB's own employee grievance committee, which found that Shuler's termination was wrongful and should be overturned.
In a written statement to Shuler, UAB Human Resources Director Cheryl Locke said, "The committee recommended that you be reinstated."
UAB President Carol Garrison evidently issued a public statement about Shuler's firing before checking with her HR director.
"UAB's president says my termination was based soley on work performance," Shuler says. "But the university's own employee grievance committee found that I should not have been terminated at all.
"Garrison further says that my termination had nothing to do with politics or pressure from certain public officials. Well, it certainly didn't have anything to do with work performance--and her own HR director has confirmed that."
